Vegetable production is the leading sector of Turkish agriculture, and vegetal perishables are the sector's backbone. Because of the availability of different ecological circumstances, all temperate, most subtropical, and tropical goods are grown. According to the latest figures of the Turkish Statistical Institute, with a massive amount of 51.6 million tons in 2017, around 45% of Turkey's total vegetative production derives from the fruit and vegetable sector. Furthermore, according to Turkstat, Turkey's fruit and vegetable production is increasing year by year with an %11.5 increase from 44.3 million tons to 51.6 million in 2017. With 12.7 million, tomatoes constitute %24,7 of the total production of vegetables and fruits. It makes tomatoes the most produced product in Turkey. Turkey is also the top producer of fresh figs globally, and most of them grow in Bursa.
The value of fresh fruit and vegetable exports, which account for around 12.9% of overall agricultural exports, was approximately 2.2 billion USD, a 12.5% increase over the previous year in 2017. Tomatoes were at the top of the list of exportable vegetables in 2017, having a significant place in total, wholesale fresh vegetables exports with a share of 13,3%, which corresponds to 290 million USD. In the last five years, Turkey has become a well-known destination to import from. Owing to this popularity, Turkey now ships to more than 120 countries, and Turkey has started to increase its market share in the CIS, EU, Middle East, and Gulf countries.
