President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made critical statements regarding the foreign trade figures and export records of 2022 in the first days of 2023. According to President Erdogan's statements, Turkey grew by 11.4% in 2021 alone, reaching the best level of the last 50 years. On the other hand, exports contributed 5.3 points to this historical growth rate. In 2022, Turkey's share of global exports exceeded 1% for the first time. At a time when the world, including developed countries, was experiencing economic crises due to the effect of the pandemic, Turkey recorded a growth of 6.2% in the three quarters of 2022. In addition, more than half of this growth came from exports of goods and services.

Turkey is a Country that Turns Crises into Opportunities

Erdogan said, "Our exports continue to be the driving force of our producing economy." In addition, the Turkish economy gained 3.5 million additional employment in the third quarter of 2022 compared to the first quarter of 2022. The contribution of the industrial sector to the employment level has exceeded one million. These figures are proof that Turkey's strong performance in production and exports has a positive impact on the Turkish economy. President Erdoğan emphasized that Turkey has become a country that manages crises and even turns crises into opportunities.

Turkey Broke Export Record of All Time

President Erdogan said, “our exports have reached today's levels by breaking record after record every month. Despite the global adversities, exports in 2022 increased by 12.9% compared to the previous year and amounted to 254.2 billion dollars. This figure is a record in the history of the Republic of Turkey. Our goal is to make Turkey one of the top 10 exporting countries in the world."

Exported to 197 Countries and Regions

In Turkey, 33,523 companies exported goods in 2022. In addition, as of January-November 2022, the number of new companies joining the export family exceeded 9,700. Turkey continues to increase its success in exports on the basis of ready-made clothing and apparel. The ready-to-wear and apparel industry realized exports of 16 billion 172 million dollars in the 9 months this year. With this figure, it achieved the highest January-September period exports of all time. The ready-to-wear industry has gained momentum in terms of seasonality every year. It has made a profound contribution to the country's economy this year as well.

According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly, Turkey's exports increased by 9.2% in September compared to the same month of the previous year. They amounted to 22.6 billion dollars. Thus, the highest September exports have been reached so far. Turkey has achieved a great increase both on a monthly and seasonal basis. The country continues its innovative activities in production and exports.

Increasing Export Value

In January-September 2022, exports increased by 17% compared to the same period of the previous year. They amounted to 188.2 billion dollars. Annualized export value exceeded 252.6 billion dollars. The progress in Turkey's annualized export value table also provides information on the breadth of the export scale. Increasing export value also increases export expectations for the coming years.

The ready-to-wear and apparel industry realized an export of 1 billion 942 million dollars in September 2021. However, it decreased by 0.7% same period this year and made 1 billion 928 million dollars of exports. Although a decrease is observed on a sectoral basis in the monthly evaluation, the situation of the sector is quite bright in terms of periodicity. As we have mentioned before, the ready-to-wear and apparel sector's exports to the 16 billion band in January-September 2022, with an increase of 9.3% compared to the same period of the previous year, is a significant increase in Turkey's export line.

Istanbul contributed to the sector's September exports, which totaled 1.4 billion dollars. Izmir came in second with $114 million, followed by Bursa with $144 million. Producers in Bursa, who haven't suffered any losses from their performance, particularly in textiles, keep producing their creative works.

11.1 billion dollars of the 16.1 billion dollars export of the sector in the January-September period of this year was realized from Istanbul. In addition, 1.4 billion dollars was obtained from Bursa and 1.1 billion dollars from İzmir.

Turkey Exports the Most to Germany

In addition, on a periodic basis, the sector realized exports of 2.8 billion dollars to Germany and 2 billion dollars to Spain in the January-September period. It also exported 1.6 billion dollars to the United Kingdom.

When we look at the country groups to which the most exports were made in the sector last month, EU countries are in the first place with 1.1 billion dollars. Other European countries ranked second with $258 million, and Commonwealth of Independent States countries ranked third with $189 billion. Thanks to Turkey's expanding network, numerical increases are also observed in the country groups to which it exports.

In the 9 months of this year, 9.9 billion dollars were exported to EU countries and 2 billion dollars to other European countries. Finally, 1.2 billion dollars were exported to Middle East countries.

The ready-to-wear and apparel industry exported to 179 countries and regions last month. According to TEA data, it received an 8.5% share of the country's total exports in the same period. On the other hand, it had a share of 8.6% in the country's total exports. The sector exported to 213 countries and regions in the 9 months of this year.

Role of Turkey in Ready-to-Wear and Apparel

With the implementation of the export-oriented development policy in 1980, the textile and ready-to-wear sector began to expand quickly, and since then, investments have expanded in the industry. In terms of gross domestic product, contribution to manufacturing and industrial production, exports, net foreign currency input to the economy, employment, and investment, the textile and clothing sector ranks among Turkey's significant industries. Today, a substantial portion of the Turkish textile and clothing business is focused on exports. The amount of capacity already in place exceeds the level of domestic demand.

As a result, increasing studies, manufacturers' orientation to new demands, and the development of new types also ensure the development of the Turkish ready-made clothing and apparel industry. In this way, many innovative products, from anti-allergic products to dirt-repellent products, attract the attention of the world. And Turkey meets export demands with its high-quality production network.

Turkey exported 876 thousand tons of pasta in the first eight months of 2022. Turkish Pasta Industrialists aim to increase this export to 1.5 million tons by the end of 2022.

Turkish Pasta Manufacturers Association (TMSD) President Aykut Göymen stated that October 25 World Pasta Day was taken into consideration with the proposal of the Turkish government.

Turkey Exported 876 thousand tons in the first 8 months of 2022

Turkey is one of the most important markets in the world's pasta industry, exporting pasta to approximately 160 countries every year. It ranks second in the world in pasta export after Italy. Also, Turkey is among the top ten in the world in pasta consumption and per capita. Pasta consumption in Turkey is around 8.5 kilograms per year.

Turkey is increasing its export figures every year thanks to the latest technology machines and quality raw materials used in pasta production. In the January-June period of 2022, pasta exports increased by 3.6 percent in quantity compared to the same period of the previous year and increased by 32.1% in value.

Turkey exported 876 thousand tons in the first 8 months of 2022. Also, Turkey has obtained approximately 627 million dollars of foreign exchange income from these exports. Wheat pasta constitutes 95% of Turkey's pasta export. Togo, Benin, Venezuela, Ghana, and Japan are among the countries that import the most pasta from Turkey.

Significant Increase in Pasta Exports

President Aykut Göymen stated that “A remarkable increase is observed in Turkey's pasta export. One of the biggest reasons for this is the removal of the pasta quota restrictions imposed by the EU. In 2021, Turkey produced around 2 million 200 thousand tons in total. Approximately 1 million 400 thousand tons of this production were exported, and the rest was consumed in the domestic market. At the end of 2022, the export target for pasta is 1.5 million tons.”

Fertile Lands of Anatolia and Mesopotamia

Göymen made the following important statements about the pasta produced in Turkey: “The quality of the pasta is directly related to the quality of durum wheat from which the semolina is produced. The homeland of durum wheat is Anatolian and Mesopotamian lands. For this reason, pasta produced from durum wheat grown in Turkey, especially in the Southeast Region, is very delicious. In addition, the quality of durum wheat grown in Anatolia is known by the whole world.”

Turkish Pasta Manufacturers Association has been able to produce special products by concentrating on research and development studies in recent years and has started to take the lead in the competition. The quality and technological production of durum wheat has highlighted the quality of Turkish pasta and this led to an increase in exports.

Pasta Industry is Important for Export and Employment

Göymen added the following to his explanations: “Nowadays, the Turkish pasta industry employs 40 thousand people. These 40 thousand people only include those working in the factory. In addition, there are the farmers who plant and grow the wheat and the people who provide the supply and logistics of the pasta. From this point of view, the pasta industry is an industry where millions of people earn their income.”

Pasta Production in the World and Turkey

According to 2021 International Pasta Organization (IPO) data, world pasta production is 16.9 million tons. Turkey is the world's third-largest pasta producer and second pasta exporter. Unlike other producer countries, all pasta factories in Turkey produce the semolina required for pasta production by themselves.

According to TUIK data, Turkey exported 1 million 365 thousand tons of pasta in terms of amount and 776 million 175 thousand 622 dollars in value in 2021. Also, in the January-June period of 2022, pasta export was realized as 665 thousand 469 tons in amount and 466 million 92 thousand 324 dollars in value. The countries that Turkey exports the most pasta to are Africa, South America, Asia, and EU countries, respectively. Turkey is among the leading countries in the world in both production and export in the pasta sector. It is also a major exporter and producer of quality durum wheat.

In 2021, Turkey exported tangerines worth 453 million dollars. The country’s export target for 2022, on the other hand, is 650 million dollars.

As we approach the end of 2022, export targets have surfaced again. Turkey started the tangerine season recently. Due to the opening of the season, the Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporter’s Association held an event. “Mandarin Harvest Ceremony” which took place in Gümüldür, İzmir, is famous for producing the world-famous and delicious satsuma tangerine.

During the event, Turkey’s success in the export of tangerines was emphasized. Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporter’s Association President Hayrettin Uçak spoke. Noting that tangerine was the export champion in 2021, he remarked on Turkey’s success.

5% of Tangerines are Produced in Turkey

Hayrettin Uçak commented on Turkey’s success in tangerine exports. According to Uçak, 140 million dollars of tangerine exports were obtained from satsuma tangerine. In fact, Turkey accounts for 5 tangerines in every 100 tangerines around the world. In Izmir, 175 thousand tons of satsuma tangerine were produced.

Uçak noted the production and export success of Turkey in his speech. He started his speech with good wishes for the new season. “I wish that the tangerine season, which is the most exported product among fresh fruit and vegetable products, will be beneficial for our country, our producers and exporters.”

Uçak continued his speech by emphasizing Turkey’s position in tangerine production and export in the world. “Turkey ranks third after China in Spain in tangerine production. We are again in third place after China and South Africa in exports. As Turkey, we exported 930 thousand tons of tangerines worth 453 million dollars to 72 countries in 2021. We exported 58 percent of the tangerines we produced.”

Turkey’s Tangerine Export Target for 2022

Further commenting on the importance of tangerines for Turkey, he also shared their export target for 2022. “These figures reveal how important tangerine is for our country. Our goal in tangerine exports in 2022 is to bring 650 million dollars in foreign currency to our country in exchange for 1 million tons of tangerines.”

With this goal, it seems that Turkey will continue to be an important trade partner in terms of tangerine exports in the world. Meanwhile, tangerine is expected to be the export champion once again by the end of the year.

Uncertainty in Russia

Russia is one of the leading markets in Turkey’s fresh fruit and vegetable exports. Due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, the future of the market remains uncertain. Hayrettin Uçak also commented on this issue by stating that the uncertainty in Russia and the recession in Europe was worrying.

New Upcoming Projects for Tangerine

Continuing his speech regarding tangerine production and exports in Turkey, Uçak shared exciting news. According to Uçak, the Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporter’s Association decided to implement two new projects.

Preventing Food Waste

Accordingly, the first project focuses on food waste. Uçak said that they carried out a project in collaboration with Ege University. He stated that between 10-30% of the fruits were wasted in Turkey. With this new project implemented, they are aiming to minimize the waste that occurs during the harvesting and storage processes. They are planning to determine the causes of the waste and provide the necessary training to resolve the issue.

Hayrettin Uçak remarked that they worked with an experienced team from Ege University and carried out studies on certain products such as pomegranates, tomatoes and tangerines. He noted that they would share the results of the project once the first year was concluded.

Good Agricultural Practices

Uçak mentioned the second project as well. According to Uçak, the second one is the Dissemination of Good Agricultural Practices Project. He added that they were carrying out this project in collaboration with the İzmir Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry. Within the scope of the project, 1000 producers from various districts will be followed, inspected and documented closely from the production to the export of the products.

95% of Tangerines are Suitable for Export

The Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporter’s Association has been carrying out another project named “We Know the Pesticides We Use.” The project analyzes and showcases the suitability of food products for export. Hayrettin Uçak remarked that, as a result of this analysis, 95 percent of the tangerines from various regions are suitable for export.

This information highlights Turkey’s success in the production and export of tangerines. Because Turkey does not only produce high-quality and delicious tangerines that the entire world enjoys, but also these tangerines are safe and suitable to be exported. As a result, Turkish exporters continue to be trustworthy partners in international trade.
