President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced the foreign trade figures for 2021. Exports in 2021 increased by 32.9 percent compared to the previous year and reached 225.4 billion dollars. Erdoğan stated that exports contributed significantly to the growth and stated that they revised their 2022 export target to 250 billion dollars.

In 2021, Turkey exported to 229 countries and regions and succeeded in increasing exports to 184 countries.

Agriculture is one of the most successful sectors in Turkey. Turkey's fertile lands, hardworking producers, government incentives, and new technology have contributed greatly to this success. The success of the agricultural sector is increasing exponentially every year. Quality products and successful production contribute to the popularity of agricultural products abroad. The demand for the products is high both at home and abroad.

Address of Success in Agriculture

Turkey, which ended 2020 with records broken in exports despite the pandemic, wrote a success story in 2021. The country's success will set an example for the world. Food and agriculture had a large share in this success. The sector always has an important place in international trade. Exporting to more than 180 countries, the Turkish agriculture and food industry continue to lead.

Turkey's agricultural ecosystems are among the best in the world, producing high-quality foods, raw materials, and organic products. It is the world's largest producer of hazelnuts, fresh and dried figs, apricots, grapes, and bulgur. Hazelnut, the secret ingredient of chocolate confectionery, is exported to 150 countries from Turkey. Besides, it accounts for 70% of the world's hazelnuts.

Export data for 2021 were announced at the meeting held with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Minister of Trade Mehmet Muş, and Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) President İsmail Gülle.

Exports in 2021 increased by 32.9 percent compared to the previous year and reached 225.4 billion dollars. The foreign trade deficit decreased by 7.8 percent annually in 2021 to $45.9 billion.

Erdogan's New Goal

Erdoğan stated that exports have a significant contribution to growth. He noted that the economy has reached pre-epidemic levels with its dynamic structure. “The economic data of the last 2 years clearly proves the success of Turkey. Turkey became one of the two countries that ended 2020 with growth. The driving force in the growth was export. We are increasing the number of countries we trade with using TL every day,” said the President.

Erdogan added, “We are revising our 2022 target as 250 billion dollars. We have set our 2022 economic growth target as 5 percent to quickly reach the position of a country with a current account surplus.”

According to official data, in 2021, Turkey's exports of agricultural products increased by more than 20%, with exports worth $29 billion. According to figures provided by the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), agricultural exports increased by 22.2 percent to nearly $29.74 billion.

Last year, the agricultural industry accounted for 13.2 percent of Turkey's total exports. It increased by more than a third to nearly $225.4 billion, an all-time record. The demand for products grown in Turkey has increased.

The prominent products in exports in 2021 were hazelnut (1.3 billion dollars), flour (1.1 billion dollars), and pasta (800 million dollars), respectively. These products constituted approximately 13.9% of the total exports.

Cereals, pulses, and oilseeds accounted for $9.15 billion in exports, followed by furniture, paper, and forestry products with nearly $7 billion. Water and animal products followed with $3.4 billion, fresh fruits and vegetables with over $3 billion, and finally, hazelnut products with $2.26 billion. The Ministry of Trade is stepping up attempts to boost exports to far-flung countries. Turkey's exports to these countries surpassed $27 billion last year, a 42.2 percent rise over the previous year.

According to the data, the majority of Turkey's exports are provided to nations more than 2,000 kilometers away. Therefore, the Ministry of Trade expects to increase the number of faraway countries to which exports are made. The Ministry has been working on the Far Countries Strategy for quite some time that is expected to be released soon.

The United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, South Korea, Japan and China are among the 18 target countries mentioned in the strategy. Indonesia, the Philippines, South Africa, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Chile, Thailand, and Vietnam make up the rest of the countries. According to the Ministry's research, Turkey receives 0.26 percent of the 8.2 trillion dollars’ worth of imports of 18 nations that are approximately 8,500 kilometers away. The Ministry anticipates opening up to these markets and growing exports to 82 billion dollars.

The strategy will increase the export of services to these countries in addition to the export of goods. Potential goods and services sectors were identified within the scope of the strategy. It is intended in this sense to open up the offshore contracting and technical consultancy sectors to new markets. In addition to the strategy of distant countries, the International Logistics Centers project has also come to an end. It is anticipated that this project will contribute considerably to the Far Countries Strategy.

Export to Distant Countries

According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), Turkey realized exports of 18 billion 999 million 738 thousand dollars to these 18 countries in 2020. This figure reached 27 billion 16 million 919 thousand dollars with an increase of 42.2 percent last year.

Among these countries, the largest export was to the USA, with an amount approaching 12.9 billion dollars. Exports to the USA increased by 45 percent last year compared to the previous year. In this period, exports to China amounted to 3.3 billion dollars with an increase of 26.2 percent. Exports to Canada increased by 67.8 percent and approached 1.6 billion dollars. Finally, exports to India increased by 34.4 percent and exceeded 1.2 billion dollars.

The highest increase in exports on a rate basis was in Chile with an increase of 122.2 percent. Last year, Turkey exported 593.3 million dollars to this country. Exports to Brazil also increased by 77.4 percent and exceeded $995.6 million. Exports to Mexico increased by 55.5 percent to 755.6 million dollars. Finally, exports to South Africa increased by 50.2 percent to 883.4 million dollars.

Expectations and Targets for the Turkish Economy and Foreign Trade Performance

According to the IMF's World Economic Outlook Report for January 2021, Turkey's 2021 growth forecast was increased by 1 point compared to October, to 6 percent. For 2022, the growth forecast for Turkey was announced as 3.2 percent, with a 0.5 percentage point decrease compared to October.

According to Euromonitor analysis, after 2022, Turkey is expected to grow by about 3.2 percent per year in the 2024-2027 period. As a result of the economic reforms, domestic and foreign private enterprise investments are expected to increase in the coming period. The GDP growth rates targeted by Turkey displayed 0.3 percent growth in 2020. In addition, 5.8 percent growth was targeted in 2021, 5 percent in 2022 and 5 percent in 2023. Turkey's exports are expected to increase by approximately 89.7 percent in the 2021-2035 period.

An inevitable change in the global supply structures is expected to affect Turkey in a positive way as well. Turkey is among the countries that can benefit most from the change in global supply structures. As a matter of fact, supply changes are expected to be high in many sectors where Turkey has the infrastructure and competitive advantages in production and exports.

There is no doubt that the new strategy of the Ministry of Trade will also contribute to these anticipated growth values. Especially south-east Asian countries can be expected to make a great contribution with their large economies and populations.

Agricultural exports granted $96M revenue in February, accounting for 57 percent of Antalya's 168 million dollars in exports. Provincial exports increased by 11.9 percent to 318 million dollars in January-February, with the agricultural sector leading the way with a 59 percent share and 189 million dollars. ATB President Ali Çandır announced the monthly export data for February. He also shared Antalya's total export data for the two months from January to February 2022.

According to Çandır, in February 2022, exports reached $168M, a 21% rise over February of last year. Çandır added, "The exports of our agriculture sector, which accounts for 57 percent of our exports, hit 96 million dollars, a 16 percent gain." "I'd like to express my gratitude to all of our farmers, dealers, and exporters for their efforts," he said.

Çandır stated that the agricultural exports of Antalya had reached 189.3 million dollars. It increased by 12 percent in the total of two months.

It seems that Antalya's export success, which increases every year, will continue to increase with production support. The fact that Antalya ranks first in Turkey's export scale also motivates farmers and manufacturers in many production sectors. Enrollment in the export list has increased compared to the previous year, both through government support and private systems.

$318M Exports in Two Months

Çandır stated that Antalya was successful in production. He noted that the city's overall exports for the two months of January-February 2022 had totaled $318M, an 11.9% rise over the same time the previous year. According to Çandır, agricultural exports increased by 12% in the last two months to $189.3M. Considering Antalya's place in Turkey's fresh fruit and vegetable production, this is not surprising.

Because when the export sector data of Antalya for 2021 and 2022 are examined, a similar ranking is seen again. The most exported product group was "Fresh Fruits and Vegetables" with 57 million 30 thousand dollars in February 2022, as in the previous year. The fresh fruit and vegetable sector shines in the first place with exports of 117 million 806 thousand dollars. In fact, fresh fruit and vegetable export increased 7.8% compared to the previous year, in the two-month total export data.

On the other hand, industrial exports increased by 12 percent and reached 78.9 million in February. “Mining Products” ranked second with 28 million 779 thousand dollars on the basis of the product group.

Exports of the mining sector increased by 10% and reached 49.9 million dollars. “Furniture, Paper and Forestry Products” ranked third with 21 million 217 thousand dollars on the basis of the product group.

Ali Çandır also gave information about Antalya's export data in Turkey. Antalya accounted for 0.9% of Turkey's total exports, 0.3 percent of industrial exports, and 5.1% of mining exports in two months.

Antalya Exports Products in Different Categories

According to Turkey's two-month export data, the location of Antalya on the product basis is as follows:

  • 21.8 percent of fresh fruit and vegetable exports,
  • 49.1 percent of the exports of ornamental plants and products,
  • 3.5 percent of agriculture and food exports are supplied from Antalya.

Turkey's highest export to Germany in February was 1 billion 785 million dollars with an increase of 19.5 percent. In line with these data, Germany ranked first among the countries to which Antalya exports the most in February, with 14 million 561 thousand dollars. It is also seen that the contribution of exports to Antalya's overall export rate is unbelievable in terms of product, sector and country data.

In the country-based export success of Antalya, the increase in exports to countries such as Italy and the USA is well above the general export increase average, also shaping the future of the city.

The Most Chemical Products Were Sold to Neighbors

When looking at the distribution of Turkey's exports to its neighbors by sector, the "chemical substances and products" sector came out on top. This sector exported 3 billion 500 million 962 thousand dollars to six bordering nations. "Grains, pulses, oil seeds and products" came in second with 2 billion 623 million 893 thousand dollars. It was followed by "steel" with 1 billion 801 million 577 thousand dollars.

"Other industrial products," came last with a value of 12 million 794 thousand dollars and "ornamental plants and products" followed with a value of 14 million 785 thousand dollars. Additionally, the "defense and aviation industry," followed with a value of 17 million 339 thousand dollars. These were the sectors with the lowest exports to neighboring countries.

Turkey's Trade with Neighboring Countries

The Republic of Turkey has gained a significant place in the world markets, especially in the region and Europe. This is the result of the breakthroughs it has made since the 1980s, especially in the way of the free-market economy and opening to foreign markets.

Due to its geographical location, it is possible to limit the countries neighboring Turkey to "Turkey's land neighbors". However, this framework is not suitable for today's understanding of trade and the historical development of commercial relations. For this reason, it would be more accurate to define them as "Turkey's land and close sea neighbors".

It is important to take into account that Turkey is a regional country due to its geo-strategic location. In this case, the neighboring countries category includes land neighbors. These neighbors are Syria, Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Bulgaria, and Greece. The Russian Federation, Ukraine, Romania, Moldova (although it does not have a seaport), Libya, Egypt, Israel, and Lebanon will also need to be included.

Continually Increasing Export to Neighboring Countries

Turkey, within the framework of its goal of becoming a world state both politically and economically, has to strengthen its position in its region politically and economically. In this context, it attaches great importance to the development of economic and commercial relations with its neighbors.

Economic and commercial relations of developed countries such as the USA, Canada, France, and Germany are great examples. The commercial relations of these countries with their neighbors and/or countries in the region have a predominant place in their general trade. With this in mind, the ratio of Turkey's trade with neighboring countries to its total trade was 15.8 percent in 1999. It was 18.0 percent in 2000, 20.1 percent in 2001 and 18.6 percent in 2002. The trade each year grew and in 2019 it was at more than 30 percent.

Economic Relations with Other Countries

Turkey is the EU's sixth-largest trading partner, accounting for 3.6 percent of total EU goods trade with the rest of the world in 2020. Turkey's greatest import and export partner, as well as its primary source of investment, is the European Union. In 2020, the EU accounted for 33.4 percent of Turkey's imports and 41.3 percent of the country's exports.

The total value of products traded between the EU and Turkey in 2020 was €132.4 billion. Turkey exported machinery and transport equipment (€24.1 billion, 38.5 percent) and apparel (€8.3 billion, 13.3 percent) to the EU. Additionally, Turkey exported agricultural and raw materials (€5.3 billion, 8.5 percent). Exports from the EU to Turkey totaled €69.9 billion. Machinery and transport equipment (€30.6 billion, or 43.8 percent), chemicals (€12.9 billion, or 18.5 percent), and fuel and mining products (€6.4 billion, or 9.2 percent) were the most popular.

In 2019, the two-way services trade between the EU and Turkey was €26.5 billion, with EU imports of services being €13.9 billion and exports totaling €12.6 billion.

During a news appearance at the ministry, Minister of Trade Mehmet Muş disclosed the foreign trade figures for February. Based on the data of the Ministry of Trade, "When compared to February of last year, our exports climbed by 25%. It hit $20 billion in February, the biggest February figure ever."

At the same time, Minister Muş expressed his wish for the war between Ukraine and Russia to end. Both Russia and Ukraine are obviously major trading partners for Turkey. These commercial relationships are strengthening by the day despite the war. In the future years, Turkey will continue to make efforts to promote peace and stability in its region and around the world.

Muş pointed out that the whole world is going through a difficult period. He emphasized that the increase in energy and basic commodity prices and the resulting increasing inflation have become a global problem. He pointed out that Turkey has strong commercial relations with both Ukraine and Russia. The war between these countries dealt a serious blow to the economic activity in the region.

Turkey's Export Reached the Highest Figure in February

Turkey's exports increased by 25% compared to last February. It reached $20B in February, the highest February figure of all time. Imports amounted to $28.1B. Foreign trade increased by 36.4% to $48.1B. The foreign trade deficit increased by 142%, year on year to $8.1B in February. Imports in February reached $20.1B excluding the energy sector. On an annual basis, the number of exporting enterprises climbed by almost 5,000. There was a very high export performance. The aim for Turkey's Medium-Term Program surpassed 230.9 billion dollars, reaching $231.9B.

The gains witnessed throughout the economy demonstrate that Turkey has a long way to go. With a 20.7% increase in goods and services exports, net exports contributed 4.8 points to growth. The Turkish economy has achieved the strongest growth rate of the last 10 years. With its high performance, Turkey has been the fastest growing country among the G20 countries. Industrial production increased by 14.4% per year. Levels above 50 in the index are seen as growth signals. Leading indicators show that the momentum in the economy continues.

Turkey's Approach Towards the Ukraine-Russia War

Furthermore, Muş stated that they have adopted a proactive attitude towards tension. "We started our work to reduce the possible impacts. We met and consulted with representatives from all our sectors at the very beginning of the events. In this context, we established two separate desks within our Ministry to minimize the effects of the Ukraine-Russia tension on our exporters and transporters.”

He stated they have created an effective management approach for exporters and transporters to continue their activities. With these approaches, they are taking the necessary steps to solve the collection concerns of exporters and the problems of Turkish trucks. They also work in coordination with other institutions and sector organizations. Together, they carry out technical studies on the supply chain and alternative distribution channels to prevent the spread of the crisis.

Muş Hopes the Dialogue for Resolution of Conflicts Will Continue

Moreover, Muş wished that the tension that destabilized the Black Sea basin, of which Turkey is a part, would come to an end as soon as possible. He hopes that diplomacy and dialogue would continue for the resolution of conflicts.

"Both Russia and Ukraine are important trade partners for Turkey. Our commercial ties with these countries are getting stronger day by day. “The strong commercial ties not only strengthen the cooperation between the countries but also enable the development of cultural rapprochement and friendship. Therefore, the increase in prosperity brought by trade is essential for prosperous societies.

In this respect, commercial ties are of vital importance in ensuring international peace and stability. It is clear that the international community needs to take more decisive steps toward the development and liberalization of trade. It is for the establishment and maintenance of lasting peace. With this understanding, we will continue to work for the development of our commercial and economic relations to contribute to peace in our region and in the world."

The acceleration in exports throughout 2021 continued this year as well. Imports, on the other hand, reached 28.1 billion dollars in February. It is a result of the harshest and unexpected winter conditions of recent years and the increase in energy prices. The number of exporting companies increased by more than 5 thousand compared to the same period of the previous year.
