A textile is a flexible artificial material composed of a network of natural or synthetic fibers created by weaving or knitting or pressed into felt. Textiles encompass all types of clothing and shoes – in fact, anything that can be worn! People throw-away useful items of clothing as they are no longer fashionable or the right size or they are torn or damaged. Instead of being thrown away, these textiles can be given a second life through recycling.

Textiles are a crucial part of material culture. They might be considered as technological objects, cultural symbols, works of art, or trade items. Textile arts are a fundamental human activity that symbolically expresses much of what is valuable in any culture.

Textiles have been used in practically every situation where their characteristics are beneficial. We see textiles everywhere in everyday life. From bags to tents, flags to home decorations textiles play an important role in our lives.

Textile's Importance in the World

Textile, one of the most significant sectors in Turkey, is also one of the top sectors in the world. Textiles are the world's 7th most traded product with a total trade value of $774B. Between 2019 and 2020 the exports of textiles decreased by 4.67%, from $812B to $774B. The trade in textiles represents 4.62% of the total world trade. Thus, making them one of the most traded products in the whole world.

Textile Statistics

In 2020 the top exporters of textiles were China with $276B, Vietnam with $38.9B, Bangladesh with $37.3B, Germany with $35.9B, and India with $29.7B. In the same year, the top importers of textiles were the United States with $122B and Germany with $63B. They were followed by the United Kingdom with $35.3B, Japan with $35.3B, and France with $32.7B. When the export and import tables are analyzed, we see that the essential players in the world textile sector, such as China, the USA, Vietnam, Germany, and France are present in the statistics. The reason for this is that the countries that import textile products, export by processing and transforming the textile products and raw materials they import.

Textile's Importance in Turkey

Turkey is the 7th top exporter of textiles, with a total trade value of $28.5B. With decreasing demand from China, it seems likely that Turkey will continue to climb to the top in the near future. We've already seen some investments shifting to Turkey from China. Soon it is likely that China will lose major investors, thus making them lose some of its importance in the textile sector.

In 2020, Turkey exported $28.5B in textiles, making it the 7th largest exporter of textiles in the world. In the same year, textiles were the most exported product in Turkey. The main destination of textile exports from Turkey is Germany with $3.9B. The United Kingdom follows with $2.4B, Spain with $2.4B, the United States with $2.17B, and the Netherlands with $1.52B.

Grain is the general name of high protein and granular plants used in flour production. Grain products are rich in both protein and vitamin E, and they meet the body's fiber needs. Grains strengthen the immune system, thus increasing the body's resistance to diseases.

One of the most significant benefits of cereal products is that it gives a feeling of satiety. For this reason, people include cereals in many different diet programs.

Types of Cereals

There are many types of cereals in Turkey, and they are grown almost everywhere in the country. Marmara Region and Central Anatolia Region are the leading regions where grains grow the most in Turkey. One of the most traded and grown cereals is wheat and it is used in many different things. For example, flour obtained from wheat is used in bread making. Some of the other dishes made from durum wheat can be listed as follows: Pasta, chicken soup, and wheat salad.

Another most traded cereal is corn, which is generally used in salads. It is one of the cereals with the highest calcium content. Corns support bone development, and it is also beneficial for dental health. Barleys, oats, rice, and ryes are also among the grains that are widely grown and traded.

Cereal Trade in the World

Cereals are the world's 26th most traded product, with a total trade of $128B. Between 2019 and 2020 the exports of Cereals grew by 8.23%, from $119B to $128B. The trade in cereals represents 0.77% of total world trade.

In 2020 the top exporters of cereals were the United States with $20.2B, Russia with $11.5B, Ukraine with $10.5B, Argentina with $9.41B, and India with $8.9B. The top importers of cereals were China with $11B, Egypt with $7.17B, Japan with $4.99B, Mexico with $4.49B, and Saudi Arabia with $4.34B.

Turkey’s Cereal Trade

Turkey has 0.23% of the total trade of grains with an export value of $293M. Yet, Turkey is one of the countries that are on the rise in exports of grains. In 2020, Turkey exported $293M in cereals, making it the 41st largest exporter of cereals in the world. In the same year, cereals were the 61st most exported product in Turkey. The main destinations of cereal exports from Turkey are Iraq with 99.8 million dollars, Syria with 47.4 million dollars, Italy with 14.3 million dollars, Libya with 13.6 million dollars, and Morocco with 10.7 million dollars.

In the same year, Turkey imported $3.56B in cereals, becoming the 6th largest importer of cereals in the world. In the same year, Cereals were the 12th most imported product in Turkey. The Biggest Harvest of the Last 4 Years

Sufficient precipitation and snowfall in January 2022 had a positive impact on the output of grains. Grain products, especially wheat, met the water needs that they could not get in the past months. Although yellowing may be seen in the plants due to extreme cold in some regions, it is predicted that this situation will not have a negative effect on plant growth. In addition, no diseases or pests were found throughout the country.

Plants entered the tillering period in early sown bottomlands and warm regions. The climatic conditions such as rainfall and temperature values in April and May are expected to stay around seasonal normals. If it stays that way, it will likely be the most fertile grain harvest of the last 4 years.

The province where most grains are grown is Konya, the largest city in Turkey in terms of surface area. Described as Turkey's granary, Konya produces approximately 30 tons of grain every year. Turkey exports 30% of the grains, and it exports to more than ten countries.

It is foreseen that the highest barley cultivation area will be formed in the near future since 2008. Accordingly, Turkey expects a higher barley yield compared to previous years.

Turkey foresees that the cereal industry, which is already on the rise, will come to a much better place with these developments. With the continuation of precipitation in the upcoming months, it is possible to come across record export news in the grain industry soon.

According to the data from the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), Turkey achieved an increase of 63.17 percent in apple exports in 2021. In 2020, Turkey exported 110 million 340 thousand 968 dollars of apples. As per the data, 180 million dollars of apples were exported to 80 countries from Turkey in 2021.

Despite the pandemic, Umut Mirza Çavuşoğlu, Chairman of the Western Mediterranean Exporters' Association (BAIB) Administrative Council, said that export records were broken. He said that fresh vegetable and fruit exports have surged in the previous two years. Çavuşoğlu noted that goods such as tomatoes, peppers, and pomegranates have seen higher-than-expected gains.

"Apple takes its position in the center of the products that had the biggest growth in exports," Çavuşoğlu remarked, stating that the apple has a valuable potential in the market. He said that they produce a significant number of apples. Nearly half of the country's apple output is produced in the Isparta region. In terms of storage, they also have a very powerful network. "Isparta apples contribute a substantial portion of the export," he stated.

According to Çavuşoğlu, the Isparta apple is also distributed internationally through other unions and plays an important role in the country's exports. It is also among the data that the apple harvest in Isparta is around 1 million tons. The Isparta region produces close to 50 percent of the country's apple production. In addition to this production, it also has great success in storage. Of course, the influence of other cities on the country's apple export is undeniable.

Turkey's Special Apple Orchards

Apple grows in the temperate climate zone. The apple tree is resistant to harsh winters with low temperatures. It grows in the Aegean region of Turkey, in the hot and dry areas of the Mediterranean and Southeastern Anatolia regions, at an altitude of more than 80 m. While apple varieties are over 6500 in the world, having over 460 apple varieties in Turkey is a very valuable number.

Spur mutants of Starking Delicious and Golden Delicious, Starkrimson Delicious and Starkspur Golden Delicious are widely produced in Turkey. Due to their growth qualities, spur apples are easier to care for. Growers are particularly interested in them because of their slow growth and early fruiting. Especially those grown in Bursa can be given as an example of these species. Amasya apple, which is mentioned in many places, has a slightly sour taste.

The production and export of Amasya apples are widespread not only in Amasya but also in many cities. The apple orchards in Karaman, which is a small city, attract a lot of attention. Karaman ranked first in having the most apple trees in 2021 and is very active in the production of apple varieties. The city produces "Amasya", "golden", "starking", as well as "crisp pink", "fuji" and "gala" apples, which have an important place in the world market. Karaman has a great influence on the majority of the apple export portfolio of Turkey.

India Imports the Most Apples from Turkey

Çavuşoğlu said that they had exported the most apples to Russia in previous years, but that the overseas market had changed in 2021. Çavuşoğlu noted that Russia slid to second place in the list of nations with the greatest apple import last year, with India taking first place. The region has also gained access to a vital market. "We mostly send apples to India," he explained.

Çavuşoğlu stated that Turkey has only been exporting to India for about 3 years. However, now India has a large share in Turkey's apple exports. This, of course, will contribute to the development of the country.

Çavuşoğlu stated that in 2020, Turkey exported 28 million 26 thousand 712 dollars of apples to India. However, in 2021, the amount jumped to 68 million 653 thousand 998 dollars, a 144.96 percent rise. According to Çavuşoğlu, the Western Mediterranean accounts for 23 million 870 thousand dollars of this total. Following India, the second was Russia with 36 million 444 dollars.

Turkey's income from fresh fruit and vegetable exports is quite high. The production of apple and its effect on the export market is clear. Therefore, manufacturers and companies have also started to seek foreign markets. They search for foreign buyers for reliable and profitable shopping. They try to be involved in the developments in the export market with the guidance of the government.

Dried figs, one of Turkey's most important export items, contributed a foreign exchange inflow of 263 million 246 thousand dollars in 2021. It's an 11% increase over the previous year. Turkey sold 68 thousand 222 tons of dried figs in 2020, generating a revenue of 236 million 491 thousand dollars, according to data provided by the Aegean Exporters' Associations. Turkey raised its dried fig exports by 5% to 71 thousand 719 tons in 2021 compared to the previous year. Its profits grew by 11% to 263 million 246 thousand dollars.

Turkey is One of the Exclusive Countries in Dried Fig Production

The fig can only be produced in a few countries due to its climatic and ecological requirements. Likewise, dried figs are only exported by these countries. Turkey is one of these exclusive countries, ranking first in the world in both dried and fresh fig output. Especially dried figs are among the important agricultural products of Turkey in the export of dried fruit. Figs provide foreign exchange input. Besides, dried fig production is important for Turkey in terms of income and employment. Another importance of figs is that they are rich in nutritional value and contribute to human health.

Fig is a Mediterranean coastal fruit, and it can be grown on the entire coastline of Turkey, such as the Marmara, Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Southeastern Anatolia Regions. However, the areas that provide the most suitable environmental conditions are The Greater and The Little Maeander Basins in the Aegean Region. These regions are the places with the highest diversity, and approximately 80% of the production takes place in these basins. Dried figs, on the other hand, are produced especially on the coasts of the Aegean Region. Dried figs are especially rich in terms of vitamins and nutrition. Because of having such great benefits, dried figs give a great impetus to export in Turkey.

Aydın Commodity Exchange Board Member Kazım Günaydın said that the best quality dried figs in the world are produced in Aydın. Emphasizing that Aydın meets 68 percent of Turkey's dried fig production, Günaydın stated that the demand for this product in the foreign market is increasing year by year.

Germany Was the Top Dried Fig Importer

In 2021, Turkey sold the most figs to Germany. Germany led the way with 37 million 719 thousand dollars in sales, followed by France with 36 million dollars and the United States with 35 million dollars. Günaydın drew attention to Aydın's place in production and exports and praised the producers.

Günaydın highlighted that 2021 would be a very beneficial year for both producers and exporters. "Both the advantages that came to be with the epidemic and the global fame of Aydin fig, have affected the Aydin fig in becoming a product that the customer accepts in the globe and stores in their kitchen, closet, and bag.”

Production, which was previously carried out within limited means, has now reached new dimensions with technology. The country's gradual development in agricultural tools and vehicles that help production also ensures the quality of production. Products are collected, dried and stored faster. Figs draw insects and other animals due to their structure. For this reason, it is important to collect and dry figs without any damage. At this stage, it is essential to meet the health conditions. Advancing technology and production power also shape exports.

Günaydın stated that “Previously, it was exclusively supplied to European Union countries and the United States, but today it is also sent to China and Thailand. Turkey also sells figs to countries such as Indonesia, Russia, and Africa. Our goal is to more than double these figures." The betterment of the producer, the worker and the country depends on the whole of quality systems.

Get Top-Quality Dried Fruits from Turkish Goods

Figs, which are carefully prepared during the production phase, should be meticulously controlled even in terms of drying systems. The same stage is valid in the export process as well. Exported dried figs can be damaged in a very short time if they are not stored in the right conditions. For this reason, many fig producers shy away from exporting dried figs.
